York Soaring - Start of Operations

Post by Jim Fryett » Fri May 15, 2020 7:35 pm

The Provincial Government as of May 14, 2020 now permits conditional opening of seasonal activities that will enable York Soaring Association to resume operations. This will be a gradual process phased in to ensure the safety of our members and the club.

Our priority will be establishment of Procedures and Policies that are specific to the pandemic as it affects the operation. The Board is working on these documents now in consultation with other provincial and national soaring clubs. This information will be published on or before May 20th before operations commence. We recommend that you carefully read and understand this information prior to arrival at the Club.

Insurance has been placed on the fleet for non-flying coverage only. As and when flying commences, flight coverage will be activated on a limited number of aircraft at the discretion of the Board.

The operation will be unlike any previous experience. The York Soaring Association property will be restricted to members only. The Public will not be allowed onto the property, there will be no guest, no family or introductory flights. It is expected that the flying activities will be substantially reduced compared to other past seasons, solo pilots only and no dual flights for the foreseeable future.

In anticipation, preparatory activities will include planning and supply of materials and equipment for use of the members while on the property.
As an overview, York Soaring Association soon be open, as with Toronto Soaring and SOSA. The club facilities will be available to our members – however, the decision to participate will be an individual choice and a commitment to abide by our rules. We must all weigh the risks and benefits of participating this summer and be mindful of our fellow club members.

On a more general level, we will again this year have the benefit of government funding to allow us to hire two interns to help manage and operate the day to day activities on the field.

Please stayed tuned to the Forum for announcements about our club operation. Participate in the Hangar Talks hosted on Zoom.

I had my first OLC question today from someone flying on the 14th, from St. Raymond, near Quebec City!

Thanks for the update Jim. This is a complex consideration, and better well thought out if slower implementation than a reckless dash to open up ASAP
