2020 Membership fees

Post by Biggles » Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:52 am

All members will be emailed the following shortly, along with a PDF membership form whereby the data fields may be completed online.

COVID19 has created an unprecedented challenge to the world with profound impact on everything we do. Both the short and the long term situations are unclear and are evolving on a daily basis. We are all hoping for a speedy and effective solution to the pandemic and its effect on our lives and activities.

YORK SOARING ASSOCIATION is currently closed to operations and we do not have an indication of when this may change. As a result, the Board of Directors has met to determine how to manage the affairs of the club. In the event there will be no flying this season, the expenses have been analysed to determine minimum essentials and to establish a non-operational budget. The fleet has been insured for ‘not in motion’ coverage. This can be upgraded very quickly to flight status through a special arrangement with our insurer. Other ongoing expenses have also been identified such as property tax, basic utilities, general property insurance and maintenance expenses . Of note the $110,000 hangar loan from members has now been fully paid off. Traditionally, all of our fixed expenses in a typical year are covered by the Membership Fees with flying expenses covered by tow and rental fees. This is not a typical year.

In order to maintain the Club we will need to collect Membership Fees. Following review of our expenses and ongoing commitments, the Board of Directors has decided to set the membership fees at 50% of the normal fee rates for 2020 with certain conditions. This 50% will entitle full membership for this season provided payment and membership application form are received before May 31st. In the event flying commences after that date, no further membership fee will be required. In addition, the club will provide one of three incentives to each member: 1. Waiver of Camping Fee, exclusive of hydro; 2. Waiver of Tie Down Fee for glider trailers; or 3. Up to two free check rides (for use in either 2020 or 2021).

If membership fees are not paid before May 31st, 100% Membership Fees will apply. Members who sign up, at any time this year, will be guaranteed no membership fee increase in 2021. With this email, we have attached a Membership Form. Please complete and return to YSA.Officemanager@gmail.com with your eTransfer payment sent to YSA.Treasurer@gmail.com.

Further notification will be sent to you in regards to the June AGM.

This is a difficult pill to swallow with the prospect that we may not have a flying season. It is important however that our members step up to support the Club in these challenging times to protect our assets and considerable investment that is the result of many years of contribution. The Board of Directors is looking to your support of York Soaring Association.

That's a very reasonable outcome. I was expecting full membership fees to keep the club afloat, many thanks for working out a more favourable proposal!

A smart and generous offer. Count me in on this. The survival of our club is paramount. If we are going in the hole later in the season, please let us know

Thanks for all the kind comments.
I would like to thank the Board for their efforts in putting forth this approach to our situation. We had a very positive discussion and sharing of ideas during our virtual Board of Directors meeting this past Monday. Fortunate that our new smaller Board is easier to gather together in the new reality of virtual meetings. Thanks to Doug and Paul for setting up the meeting using 'Discord'.
Stan is currently working on the new Membership application in pdf so that we can submit by email.

Stay engaged everyone, and with some luck we should be able to enjoy our precious sport soon.

Thanks, Miguel

So, I think it's $325 + $80 (SAC) for a regular member, = $405

Have I got that right?

If I understand it correctly, SAC will refund all but $1.00 to the club.

I see a disconnect between the SAC fee asked for and what I read at https://www.sac.ca/index.php/en/documen ... nutes/file unless of course this is being done anyway.

See point #8 on the SAC minutes attached.

Fees can be found on the website.

Membership before May 31 is 50% so for a regular membership this will be $325+tax + SAC $80

OK, so we're paying an additional $79 for our membership?

YSA Full members pay $80 as usual for SAC membership, as normal.

There are various SAC initiatives for clubs (e.g. currently safety related) whereby SAC contributes to our projects, often in proportion to number of SAC members.

This year, SAC have suggested that clubs only forward on $1 and retain $79 to assist in compensating for the lower club income this year.

cut/paste from SAC website:

The Soaring Association of Canada (SAC) is the governing body for the sport of gliding in Canada. Mandated to safeguard and promote our sport, we render support and representation to glider pilots and gliding clubs across the nation through a variety of committees. On a national level, we represent our affiliated clubs and members on issues related to licensing, medical requirements, airspace and regulation. Internationally, we maintain representation within the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and the International Gliding Commission. We invest in the renewal and expansion of our sport by offering bursaries for young pilots, financial support for contenders representing Canada in international competitions, and financial aid for clubs carrying out marketing and publicity initiatives. Additionally, we publish free flight, SAC’s quarterly magazine. Finally, we keep our sport safe by providing extensive training and development programs for instructors, safety seminars, and maintaining safety programs.

SAC will be contributing to Safety Improvements in the club which can be applied to number of items. Purchase and installation of new equipment will give us something to do while we wait for restrictions to be lifted. For more information refer to the SAC Annual report.

Alrighty, in simple summation - the club would like $447.25 prior to May 31.

If I got that wrong, please advise.

Each member/ex-member has an individual circumstance as to liability to the club.
Each member/ex-manager should consult the York Soaring Association Website for list of possible fees due. Email the office: YSA.OfficeManager@gmail.com if further clarification needed.

As a minimum, to be a member, one form of membership fee required, plus SAC membership.

When I sent mine in a couple of weeks ago I forgot to add the tax, but there's sufficient credit to cover that in my account
