Spring is Sprung in Florida

Post by Charles Petersen » Wed Mar 11, 2020 8:12 pm

After a somewhat disappointing January/February, the soaring has arrived. check out these photos:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/RFXbSpnjJUb9yy2B7
and
https://photos.app.goo.gl/FBp4dJmvQKCr9FAE9

The first shows the vario where we love to hear it sing, and the second, what it looks like when only one tug is working and 50 gliders want to launch.

But damn, it's good; c'mon down y'all.

Oh, yes, the weather has 'improved', or rather, arrived, as it does every March. Check out yesterday's flights, Practice Day for the Seniors
https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-3.0/g ... 987472-s=1

I flew back seat with Shawn Knickerbocker in the DG 1000T. Shawn was learning his Oudie, so we didn't always go where we were supposed to, but what a great day in the cloud-filled sky with Cu's to 5000'+

Remember TRUE NORTH, Jock's former Ventus. Restored to Bristol Fashion by Ed Hollestelle, and registered in the Seniors Contest, but just withdrawn so they can return home :(

So, here's the story for today:

The 500, HQJ, is derigged and in the trailer, as always the York glider is during the Senior's Contest.

Mike Collier is heading back to Canada for a surgical appointment his wife got (knee replacement), and Wayne & Rob have cancelled their planned trip for next week. So, no foreseeable demand at present.

I spoke to Mike Ronan, our 'retrieve' ride, and he is planning on sitting tight here in Florida.

So, it's here, but unrigged, and if you want to use it it will be here, but you'll need to rig it. My guess is that Mike will drive home in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

And BTW, a rumour from Mike: AC will cancel all flights to Florida next Friday.

Are we having fun yet?

Just received a blurb as attached which says, among other things, .....

"We have received confirmed reports that several insurance
providers are giving policy holders 10-days to return home to
Canada before all coverage ceases."

that puts a crimp in Florida, and visiting the grandchildren in Kansas. :-(

I just checked with our travel insurance agent, Sanderson Travel Insurance, which for years has offered out-of-country health insurance to glider pilots through TUGO and Met.

He reassured me that this does not apply to the companies they represent.

So we continue to plan on returning mid-April. The Seniors contest is a diminished affair with no pilots meetings, and thinly attended social events, but damn, the conditions are GREAT. And rural central Florida is an agreeable place to wait out this flu.

Well, the panic has set in, as some Canadian travel insurers terminate coverage on 10 days notice. So Mike is picking up the glider this weekend because his insurance issued by a COPA partner is invalid after March 28.

It's in the box with, I hope, all its equipment except the parachutes (which I am bringing home), and the tires are inflated, the hubs greased and it's ready to roll.

Riki and I will leave next Monday given our concern about reported hotel closures.

Remember when the Donald assured us that it was 'stopped'?

I hope I'll be there for the Banquet again this year, - but please, no multi-level marketing pitches ;)

Mike will depart tomorrow, Sunday, with the DG 500 in tow, and I expect he will drop it off at York Monday pm or Tuesday.

We are also departing tomorrow morning for a two-day trip. Sad to leave this incredible soaring weather, but it's a little scary how many here don't seem to think they will be affected.

I will pop by the field and report on conditions for bringing the trailer in.
