SOSA K-21 Coming to York

Post by Charles Petersen » Thu Sep 13, 2018 10:01 am

On Saturday I will visit SOSA to sign a cheque from Youth Flight Canada as a deposit on the purchase of a K-21, one of two they are selling.

Under an arrangement similar to GIKI, (also owned by Youth Flight Canada), the additional K-21 will be operated by York, but will prioritize training flights and youth scholarship recipients, allowing more access to instruction by those wishing to train in a 21, and also increasing the availability of YSK, the most popular twin in the York fleet for member flights, intros and post solo practice.

This glider has been factory-painted with polyurethane and looks pristine. It has an advanced LX Nav vario/flight computer and FLARM. I will post photos after my visit.

We will complete the purchase when the new K-21's arrive at SOSA, anticipated to be around November 1. Stay tuned!

Fantastic! It's rare for clubs to sell K21s, they are far too useful. I wonder why SOSA are parting with theirs?

They have a policy of buying new and replacing after 10 years.

And, with a bulging bank account, padded perhaps somewhat by both their initiation fee and the walk-in intro flights from their proximity to the African Lion Safari, they are convinced that this 'replace every 10 years', whether they need it or not has served them well.

There are a couple of other Canadian clubs salivating over the acquisition of the other one, especially because of the cost saving of US to Canada delivery, Canadian registration and C of A, and a couple of US clubs also interested, as evidenced by all willing to write deposit cheques.

They constitute the gold standard in Europe, where they are more common, and Schleicher have just announced that they will update the design for the continuing production they see.

Now, to get a winter work project to refinish the YSK wings...

Recent article in Gliding International says the K21 is now in production for 39.5 years with over 900 units produced! The new "B" version has many upgrades and would be a great addition to any fleet (maybe in 10 years?). It is popular in it's original version for many reasons as we have experienced first hand at York. Charles, thank you for working the magic............again!

Well done Charles, again. The second K-21 will be a great and well needed addition.

We are so fortuate to have Charles. He has done so much for the club as it struggles to modernize and remain a leader in the soaring community. I am sure we only know the half of it :D

Yes, Jock, it will be operated, insured and maintained by York, just as is GIKI, and York will have the use of it without the considerable capital cost ($115K) that the club is unable to make at this time. and, it will complement YSK by having a priority for flight training (student cards prioritized over members, so the choice to train in a K-21 is not a never-never plan) and, priority with no-charge air-time for FC scholarship students.

Here is a link to some photos of this very fine ship: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN ... xvWC1Pckt3

Is this a problem somehow? It's surely not a surprise!

Update on the arrival of the YFC-owned K-21: it will be delayed until the spring, as soon as the runways of both SOSA and YSA are operational, so at a guess, end of April.

SOSA's new K-21's, and yes they are the B model, which were 'scheduled' to arrive the end of October, are now going to arrive in March. It will ease hangar congestion at York over the winter, and allow SOSA to continue to utilize it for their winter winch operations.

And BTW, the second K-21 went to Ulli's club, Rideau Valley. Ulli is the agent for Schleicher.

I had two winch launches in ZH on a no-contest day during this year's Canadian Nationals.

That's a different one bought I think, from the US.

This is not the registration on the Youth Flight Canada 21, (ours ends in ZH which is also the tail (contest) number).

Great Lakes bought their K-21 out of the States and it was listed at $89,000 USD which equates to approximately $120,000.00 Canadian. (Plus they have the costs of import!) The plane is in the same condition as the York K-21 prior to it's refinish.

YFC paid C$115,000.

Does it come with a trailer, or will it need YSK's trailer for retrieves?

Although delivery is included, - the aerotow, a trailer is not.

So yes, YSA's for retrieves. Storage, we haven't thought about, but the number to twins and the numbers of trailers will remain the same.
